SpamAssassin is a Pearl-based email spam-filtering tool created by the Apache Software Foundation that may be used alone or as a subordinate program to check incoming mail for several spam traits. SpamAssassin has been a member of the Apache Foundation since 2004 and is distributed under the Apache License 2.0.
To determine whether or not the message should be classified as spam, it employs a variety of network tests and spam filtering. The majority of Apache SpamAssassin's rules are based on regular expressions that are compared to the message's body or header data, but it also makes use of a variety of additional spam-fighting strategies, such as fuzzy checksum, DNS algorithms, Bayesian filtering, third-party applications, blacklists, and internet databases, to get an overall score.
If a message meets the requirements of a test, a score value will be awarded to it. Positive numbers indicate "spam," whereas negative ones indicate "non-spam". The scores might be positive or negative. A message is compared to each test, and Apache SpamAssassin combines the findings to assign the message a global score. The likelihood that the communication is spam increases as the score rises.
The application can be coupled with the SpamAssassin hosting mail server to automatically filter all mail for a site. It interfaces with several mail applications and may be used by individual users in their mailboxes. SpamAssassin is quite flexible Since it can be customized to support individual user preferences even when used as a system-wide filter.
Justin Mason developed Apache SpamAssassin after making several improvements to Mark Jeftovic's older filter.plx tool, which had been in development since August 1997. On April 20, 2001, Mason completely recreated all of Jeftovic's code and published the new codebase to SourceForge. The project formally changed its name to Apache SpamAssassin in the summer of 2004 after becoming an Apache Software Foundation project.
Several rules are applied by SpamAssassin to determine whether or not mail is spam. The program refers to these guidelines as "tests." Each test has a specific value that, if a message satisfies the requirements, is given to it. The value might be either positive or negative. A positive value denotes "spam," whereas a negative value denotes "non-spam".
The computer algorithm creates an overall score by averaging all the test results. The score threshold, which determines whether a message is a spam or not, is established by SpamAssassin. Typically, for a communication to be labeled as spam, it must pass many checks. It won't be flagged as spam if there is only one test match.
Simple Settings: You don't need to constantly update SpamAssassin with information about your mail accounts, mailing list memberships, etc. it just needs a little amount of configuration. Spam may then be prevented using the site and user-specific restrictions after being categorized. Both mail servers and a user's mail user-agent application can be used to apply policies.
Free extensions: It is given under the same terms and conditions as other well-known open-source software programs like the Apache web server, making it free software. The extension is simple because plain text is used to hold anti-spam tests and settings, making it simple to add new rules.
Flexible: SpamAssassin can be integrated anywhere in the email stream because it has its functionality contained in a well-designed, abstract API. A broad range of email systems, including Procmail, Sendmail, Postfix, qmail, and many more, can use SpamAssassin.
Broad-spectrum: To find spam signatures, SpamAssassin employs a wide range of local and network checks. Because of this, spammers find it more difficult to pinpoint a flaw in which to design their messages around.
